Ms. K Voki and Math Word Cloud

In this blog I will address the topics of the "voki" and "word cloud".  A voki is a personalized speaking avater.  A word cloud is a tool for generating clouds formed from words that you provide.

I had fun creating my voki and I can see many uses for it in my teaching.  I would like to create a blog for my students to use over the summer that they can go to to have fun practicing their Math skills.  The voki would be the tool that I would use for my students to click on to get the directions of what the activity for the day would be.  Right now I have a prerecorded voice because I did not have a microphone when I set up the account.  In the future, I could change it so I would record my own voice.  It would be fun for my students to create their own vokis too.  The more fun that my students have using technology, the more willing they will be to use it.  If they experience the fun of technology while doing Math, they will associate "funness" with Math too.

This is the Math word cloud that I created.  Besides just using it as a "decoration" for the page, I could use it for different activities.  For example, I could have the students find a word in the shape that they do not know and use the internet to find out what it means.  I could have my students create their own word clouds and display them around the room.  The more that my students are engaged with the concept, the more they will retain.  My students will have fun collaborating with their peers doing this.  They must be allowed to take ownership of their own learning.

Learning about and creating the voki and word cloud enhanced my own knowledge and will help me be a better 21st century teacher.
